Brentwood Sunshine Preschool has established a Sister School relationship with the Early Childhood Education Center at Proyecto Pastoral at Dolores Mission. The Early Childhood Education Center (ECE Center) is “working in the economically and politically disenfranchised community of Boyle Heights to empower the community personally and socially by developing grassroots projects in education, leadership, and service.” The ECE Center takes pride in its commitment to providing a developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive program for children 18 months to 5 years and a strong parenting program. The Early Childhood programs for Toddlers and Preschoolers occur at two different sites, Centro de Alegria and La Guarderia. The program has made a significant impact at addressing the struggles of Hispanic youth in educational environments.

Sunshine’s connection to Proyecto takes the form of exchanges between children and teachers and shared professional development. We find that it is beneficial to have this special organization as our connection to service and to developing ties between children of the same age and teachers who work in Early Childhood. Brentwood Sunshine Preschool and Proyecto ECE Centers have partnered in teacher education workshops and class-to-class art projects, including a Valentine’s Day card exchange, and financial support through the Sunshine Auction. The annual Sunshine Auction gives a portion of the proceeds to support Proyecto Pastoral.
