Our Service Learning
Community Care, Always
The Sunshine Preschool's community service program is designed to teach children about different communities with a diversity of needs both locally and around the world. Through a range of activities and presentations from professionals in the non-profit world, our children learn about fundraising, marketing and how they can support under-resourced communities, building compassion, empathy, agency and a sense of responsibility for others. The children complete projects that teach them about the work of organizations such as Boys and Girls Club, Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, Books of Africa, and LA Food Bank developing an understanding of how people come together to make the world a better place.
One of the main recipients of Sunshine's community service learning program is Proyecto Pastoral at Dolores Mission. Proyecto works in the economically and politically disenfranchised community of Boyle Heights providing cradle to college programs, parent support and education and two Early Childhood Education Centers.
Sunshine’s connection to Proyecto takes the form of exchanges between children and teachers, shared professional development, specific need-based projects and financial support through its fundraising efforts. The annual Sunshine Gala & Auction gives a portion of the proceeds to support Proyecto Pastoral and has funded such projects as a library and garden for their preschool children.
